Package the environment
A container image bundles application files and runtime dependencies. Running the image creates an isolated process environment. This reduces differences between machines, although architecture, configuration, and external services still affect behavior.
Images and containers
An image is the packaged template. A container is a running instance of that template. You can run several containers from the same image with different configuration. Treat images as versioned artifacts so you can identify exactly what is deployed.
Keep state explicit
Files written inside a container may disappear when that container is replaced. Store persistent data in an appropriate volume or external service. Provide secrets at runtime rather than copying them into an image that may be distributed.
Use them where they help
Containers are particularly useful when a project has several runtime dependencies or must run consistently in multiple environments. For a small application, a straightforward local setup can also work well. Choose the approach that makes the project easier to reproduce and maintain.
